Kittson County's official courthouse history gives the District Court page a local anchor. The first court proceedings in Kittson County were held in 1881 in Hotel Hallock. The hotel was offered for court use without charge, although a four-dollar bill was submitted for use of a jury room and broken window lights. The first case involved theft of a yoke of oxen, and the defendant received a three-year state prison sentence.
